Big Leaves and Monsters
Bananas, Gingers, Cannas, Gunnera and more... the jungle foliage plants; the big leafed herbaceous monsters that scream exotica at anyone who dares pass. The lush machete bashing foliage; the sprightly growth; the spectacular flowers.
The trade off for this spectacular show is herbaceousness. Plants fall into winter dormancy; giant leaves disappear, energy is conserved and stored to sprout forth with gusto the following spring. Perhaps there's no surer sign of the end of winter, and a lifting of spirits, than a thrusting banana. Of all the exotic-effect flora there are few that stir the emotions as these.
