There are big palms, and there is Jubaea chilensis. As far as cold-tolerant palms go there's nothing that can match the size and presence of the beautiful Chilean Wine Palm. Large specimens in the UK can be counted on less than two hands, and Mulu imported two more in August this summer.
The "smaller" specimen measured 2.4m clear trunk and weighed in at a healthy 4.8 tonnes; its larger travel companion taller at 4.2m clear trunk (1m diameter) and heavier at a mighty 9.6 tonnes!
Serious cranes are needed for such plants; and a heavy dose of bravado. Mulu can muster both, and organised the direct import from Chile of these two specimens, exported under strict licence by a State regulated nursery responsible for the replanting and re-establishment of native Jubaea forest.
As we lifted each palm from the sea container their true size became apparent. They were manoeuvred into position by highly skilled specialists, but I admit my heart was in my mouth as I watched ten tonnes of palm gently rising off the floor.
Once the job was done we gasped at the stature of these majestic plants, and it all made sense: there is nothing that compares.
